I am the hero of the moment. Well thanks to the internet and its IT forums, I am. The thing is, that the youngest is currently into Noddy. Not the lead singer from Slade, I may add, but the Enid Blyton favourite character. He has been into this for some time now, and his brother managed to get 10 videos, from eBay for him for Christmas. Today, he decided that he wanted his Noddy CD Rom installing. Now bearing in mind, that this was a state-of-the-art piece of software for windows 98 (not 98se mind you), and his PC is Vista Home Basic, it was never going to be easy. Of course after installation, it would not work. It just would not autorun the start file. Tried in Win 98 and Win 95 compatibility modes, and nothing.
So, a compromise, I thought, I’ll install it on my Windows XP machine. Not much better. It complained that I needed a minimum 3mb of virtual memory (it’s set a lot lot higher than that). So I was beginning to think that this would not happen, and we would have a bad day. I tried looking for an XP or Vista patch, but to no avail. As a last resort, I typed the whole problem into Google and hit ‘I Feel Lucky’. A games forum page came up, with the advice to install DirectX 9, which apparently runs side by side with DirectX 10 on Vista. Off I toddled to the MS website to download the file, only to find, that the download was a stub file, that opens the correct MS webpage, and installs from there. That was no good, youngest lads computer is not internet connected. Eventually found another site, and downloaded the correct files. After a little tweaking, the program ran. Hero am I (today at least).
It does not look any different !!! Microsoft has decided that I need to upgrade both MSN Messenger and Live Writer. So what is different ?? I suppose I should have looked at the what’s new page, but really, It was working fine before. (I feel a rant coming on here … this may warrant a posting in my Grumpy group)
This one of the problems I have with Microsoft. You can be chugging along, quite nicely thank you, without any problems, the MS decides you need an upgrade. They are always doing it with Windows, and look at the arse bucket the did with Vista. That has to be the least popular Windows OS ever. Even the hardnosed MS fans, have little good to say about Vista. At work, we are running XP Pro, Service Pack 2 (they don’t like SP3 for some reason), and in the words of the good and great, “We have no plans to upgrade the current operating system at the present time”. If the usual is anything to go by, we should upgrade to Windows 7, just as Windows 10 is announced.
Just heard, that the eldest has been to see a movie called “The Spell”. It is a local movie project, that he got a part in as an extra. A whole 7 or 8 seconds. He went to see the premier last night, and I think he is quite proud of himself. I told him to quickly add it to his CV. He should also tell the people at the job place up at Uni. There may be a lot of small parts in movies that students might be making. It will be a way of getting his name around.
Well, it has been a reasonable day, in parts, for a Monday (I think). I managed to get all the IT kit set up for Wednesday. The scanner is working, although I must remember which TWAIN drivers are best. ActiveSync 4.5 was already loaded, which came as a surprise. It is not usually preloaded with XP, unless BK did when setting up. It was unusual with the cameras though. The Panasonic is seen as a separate Windows drive, whereas the other camera (and for the life of me, I cannot remember the make) appears as a camera. I fully expected to have to install drivers. I will have to write down, the process for installing Enterprise Manager, or more to the point, registering the SQL server. I always forget.
Eldest is playing the “I’m grown up and know everything and can do everything myself” game. I know we were all the same at that age, but I now know what my Mum and Dad went through with me, when I was at that phase. I felt like a taxi driver this morning. When I dropped them off, I almost looked over my shoulder and asked for the fare !!! I don’t mind really, but it means that I don’t get to work until around nine and it really messes up my flexi-time.
I bought my new wheel trims today. I lost one somehow, but I don’t now where. I have an idea, it was either when I caught the kerb in the village, or when I caught the kerb down at East End Park. Either way, it’s gone. I looked at both locations, but it was not there. I have just reserved a couple of tribal graphics for my car. It says online, that they are only £1.00 each, but I thought they were a lot more that that. I’ll take the confirmation email, with the price on. They are side graphics, but I think I may put them on the bonnet. Mrs H does not approve !!!!
