The IT testing went okay. It took a lot longer than anticipated. I ended up doing two sessions, 9:30 until 12:00 then 13:30 until 15:00. Once again, the problems were at this end. Things that should have been done that hadn’t been done. Files in the wrong place. Wrong data paths. Mind you, the upgrade was run differently this time. There was a lot more for me to do. Last upgrade, the client was installed on the server, and the software house dialled in and did all the work. This time it was done from a local PC. Lessons have been learned, I hope. What I think is needed, is a concerted effort on both sides to communicate more. Next time I will insist on a project plan, with a detailed list of tasks and responsibilities. Next time, I will take more of a lead.
I’m more than a little pissed off with the DVLA. I want to pay my car tax online, but because my insurance runs out at a similar time, the DVLA will not let me. They say that some national insurance database, has not been updated with my new insurance detail. So that means a trip to the post office in the next village. I though technology was supposed to help and make things easier.
Tesco ‘green’ points are a funny thing. You get loyalty points for every bag you reuse. So basically, you take your own bags. A couple of weeks ago, I was shopping for a number of things, and unfortunately, forgot to take my bags into the store. Because the car was parked near to the store exit, I declined the offer of disposable bags, and put all the shopping back into the trolley. When I checked my receipt, I noticed that there were no ‘green’ point, so I toddled off to ‘Customer Service’ to query this. The very nice lady at the counter told me that I could only have the points if I re-used bags, and that the cashier would need to count how many bags I re-used. Totally bizarre. You should have seen the look on the Customer Service lady’s face, when I asked for 6 plastic bags to put my shopping in !!!!
Another weekend over. Eldest was up for his drama rehearsal tonight. He should have been at the village hall for 7pm, but the bus failed to turn up (hmmm). He did not want any food, as he had been to the German Christkindelmarkt in Millennium Square. It is an annual thing, and is very popular. Of course there are many who like to complain that it is ‘very expensive’ and ‘ a waste of money’, but I sometimes think, that it is just because some people are simply used to an English type of market.
I have been asked to do both a poster and the ticket design for the panto. I did the ones for the Wind in The Willows play in the summer, and I think I did them too well. This time the panto is The Snow Queen, and trying to find a graphic to put on the tickets is difficult. All the images of a ‘Snow Queen’ seem to be mainly ice blue and rather too serious for a panto. However, I did find one, which I am going to work on. Wish me luck, I think I might need it on this one !!
Work should be interesting this week. Fingers crossed, the software testing should go ahead on Tuesday. I really do not have a lot of faith in our IT department having everything in place. Most of the problems we seem to have with our main system, is due to a lack of understanding by our IT. However it always is the same …… the software house blame our IT, and our IT blames the software house. Then we play this ‘cat and mouse’ game until our IT realise it’s their fault and blame the software house for not being specific enough. Come on guys, you’ve been doing this for over ten years now. Is it not time that you worked together?
Youngest had another Sunday without any medication again. Another day of laughing and good humour, with no incidents at all !!!! Mind you as Mrs H said, he could not have done without it yesterday, and we both know he will need it first thing tomorrow !!! So was Saturday’s issues a left over from Friday ???
The IT testing is not going ahead as planned. It would appear, that the software house is still having problems. Now the question is, are the problems based at the software company, or are the problems at our end ? If you consider, that the software company have not had problems with anyone else, it kind of sends out a message. Also bearing in mind that our last two updates had similar problems ……
Did not get to run this evening. I went to see my mum on the way home, so it was about 6pm when i got in, and I really did not feel like it at that time. I’m not sure how this is going to work. It would probably be better, if I ran in the morning, but that means getting up 45 minutes earlier. Whilst I could get used to that idea, I just need the impetus to start.
Not heard anything from the eldest today. It is cheap drinks night at the Dry Dock pub in Leeds, so he may have gone there for the evening. He is supposed to be coming home tomorrow, for his drama group. He has missed the last two sessions, so he needs to get his act together.
Youngest has been fine for the most of the evening. However it sounds like he is starting to wind up a little. Probably tired.
Not a lot to say really. Work’s been a pain. I’m getting more and more fed up with the fools who think they are something.
IT got it wrong again !! The software house was going to do the configuration this afternoon, but out lot had not done the work that was needed. Now it could well be, that the software house had not fully explained what was required. There should be a project plan, but I never saw one, so maybe I’m being a little harsh on our crew. Saying that though, the project leader at our end went home early today !!!! Makes you think !!
It has been a very interesting day. That is, after I had recovered from last night. It was almost midnight when S**** and me came out of the pub, and although I had not had a lot to drink, I had a bit of a bad head this morning. It was a good evening though, and it seems I may now be part of the ‘group’ now. Or as St**** put it ‘one of us now’.
We had the software house ‘User Group’ meeting today. Spike had arranged it, and it seemed to be going very well. Then, the guest speaker overran on her presentation slightly, and the question and answer session raised a number of issues, which delayed the remaining parts of the meeting. We had to be out of the meeting/luncheon rooms by 2pm, and by 1pm Spike was beginning to look like a headless chicken. All good fun. the lunch buffet was fine, but there was nothing to drink !!! Not even water, which did not go down well at all.
Eldest went back to his place tonight. I think Mrs H is beginning to start to get used to the whole idea now. He brought loads of washing with him, and she is going to take it back tomorrow, and try and get him signed up at the Uni’s gym. It apparently costs £100.00 for the year, or £4.00 per visit. Well you only have to go once a week, and your already making a big saving. He seems to think, that he will go a couple of times a week, and go swimming too. Swimming will be good for his back.
It should be a reasonably quiet day tomorrow. Spike is off, and I do not have too much on at the moment. I need to try and sweet talk the software house into either giving us 4 user license for one of our applications, or at least letting us have it cheap. I do not know how that is going to turn out. They want us to upgrade to a different piece of software, and it is not something we are in a position to do at the moment.
This week seems to be dragging on somewhat. As I expected, the software house rang me at twenty past four … “hello … I finish around four pm as I start around seven thirty am”. Yet again W**l came up with a theory, that I instantly demolished. Does this guy not have any experts that talk to him ?? It is getting to the stage whereby I may have to ring the other office and talk to one of the old school, either M****n or P**l. Still no phone call from the repair company. It is quite bad really. Parts of the company are willing to help, beyond their remit, and others just don’t care at all.
Again, no walk today, except for when I delivered the Parish Magazine. I suppose that could count. It does take just over thirty five minutes, but it’s not exactly ‘brisk’ exercise. However it is better than nothing at all. Still no sign of the pedometer. Tomorrow is the last day. I knew it was too good to be true, that the Council could get something right. But then again …… I could be wrong !!
Not chatted to J**** since Monday. It is slightly worrying. I hope everything is okay. She seems have been on facebook recently, but I don’t often show myself to be online there. J*** was in a chatty mood last night. I can handle that occasionally, but I don’t want to get back to the old ways there. There you go. It is 10:20 and J**** has just signed on a mobile. Panic over.
A bit of a ball ache …… Spike is back on Monday. I thought he had Monday off. It would appear that it is the 1st Monday in September that he is off. G*** is still being a bit of an ar*e. She is such a patronising person, and quite selfish really. If that is Buddhism, then you can keep it.
Youngest is back from respite tomorrow. We hope he is in a better mood than before he went. As I have mentioned, the eldest moves out on Saturday. Mrs H is bearing up at the moment, but it is going to be a rough weekend. I am not looking forward to Saturday night at all. I had a quiet word with him about ringing home over the next week. I think we need to plan this out. I don’t want his mum thinking he is only ringing for the sake of it. What I think he needs to do is not to ring on Saturday, but wait until Sunday evening to call. Then he should ring again sometime on Tuesday. After that, just a couple of times a week will be good. If he rings mobile to mobile, it does not cost anything.
