Strange but true …

The strangest thing about being “Home Alone” is the noises that occur during the night. K*** is away with her sister and niece and R*** is on respite until Friday. Usually, R*** has his computer and TV on all night and you can hear that as a faint background noise. Then there is your partners breathing and other sleep noises, which I won’t go into. But you get used to Sleepthose sounds as they have become part of the norm. Now, when those noises are not there, you begin to hear the other noises. The noises that you never normally hear or register. Monday night is an example.

I had woken up around 2:30 for some reason and was struggling to get back to sleep. My usual sleep trick of trying to focus on a single thought wasn’t working and I was just laying there, listening. The creak of the floorboards. The passing car. The screech of the owl. The cats fighting down the road. The neighbour taking his dog for a walk (not kidding.) The hum of the refrigerator downstairs. They are all noises which I don’t usually hear. Then just as you start to drift off to sleep, the wind blows and one of the room doors bangs shut. You know what it is, but it shakes you up a bit and you’re back where you started.

Then last night, I was late going to bed (reason below). It was gone midnight when I settled down, but was awake at 4:00 and just dozed until 7:00 when I decided to get up. Couldn’t stay in bed any longer.

Went out last night. Went to the Red Lion in the village. It’s been a long time since I was there on a Tuesday night. Stopped going when I started to get worried how K*** would manage if Red LionR*** had a melt-down. But, as I was on my own, I thought ‘why not?’ Tuesday is “Quiz Nite” as they call it, so all the old faces I used to drink with were there. It seemed strange to see them again, as it must be a year since I was last in on a Tuesday. I didn’t do the quiz, as I’m not so good on my own, but it was nice being part of that crowd again. I was thinking as I walked home, that when R*** starts his new respite hours in July, Tuesdays will be one of the days when he is away every week. I think it is time to maybe start the “Quiz Nite” visit again on a more regular basis. Just got to convince K*** that it might just be fun.

Eldest is coming round tonight. He has someone to see and something on with the drama group. He is not taking a big active role in the group this year as he is finding it a little tiring at the moment. So no “Murder Mystery” play and no Pantomime either. The group are still trying to get him to take a part, but he’s insistent that he wants a break this year. They’ll be going on to the pub, so it will be another late night. Then tomorrow, I’m out with my old school friend. But I’ll be driving back, so it may not be a late night.

It’s beginning to feel like etc etc etc….

Yesterday was the first real day of Christmas here. The day also goes under the celebratory name of “I-need-to-clean-the-whole-house-and-you-need-to-clamber-around-in-the-loft-and-find-all-the-decorations-because-its-Christmas” Day!!!! Today is yesterday, part the second. With the sounds of  “Scrooge”, “Grinch”, “Miserable Old Sod”, “Humbug” and all the other seasonal insults around me, I reluctantly begin to fall into place. I have to say, I hate Christmas! More to the point, I hate what Christmas has become. It just seems to be a time for eating, drinking and spending more than is good for anyone. What has happened to the spirit of Christmas ? Seems to me that it now comes ‘gift pack’ with a 35ml bottle and a tacky glass.

We don’t have a real tree anymore. We gave that up a while back, when tThe Treehe price of a piece of dead wood became too high. We now have a three foot high (including basket) fibre optic tree. It does the job, looks good and is always a talking point. The really good thing, is that there are no nasty needles to sweep up afterwards. Because, you never get them all. There will be one day, probably mid January, when you’re walking around in your bare feet, and you’ll find one !!! Never a good time.

It’s ‘Panto’ time in Bramham again. I’m not going to go into the ‘oh no it isn’t – oh yes it is’ routine……. ah I just did! S**** is again one of the stars. This years effort has again been written by a local lad, and it is a version of Aladdin, but it’s more Persian than the usual Chinese offering. S**** plays the part of the Aladdin’s simple brother, Cy. He seems to be on stage for most of the performance, and his part is very slapstick. He is coming home very battered and bruised from all the knockabout routines, but he says it is great fun, and it certainly was very energetic, when K*** and me saw it on Thursday. I’ll post some pictures later, when they get uploaded.

My writing efforts continue. I’m working on a short story at the moment, that may involve a troll. Not the internet type, but the type of troll that might live under a bridge. Still not sure where it’s going yet, but I’m managing to knock out a couple of hundred words every other day. I’m working on the idea that I should just write, and when I come to the end, then start to edit and correct it. It’s difficult, as I seem to see what is not right every time I come to write some more. Both style and content are a work in progress. I’m also in the process of writing a small play/sketch. This started as listening in to two separate conversations and then expanding it into a very short story. someone then suggested that it would probably make a good (or adequate was the word) sketch. So I’m giving it a go. Who knows, it may even end up being performed by the drama group.

Catch up …..

It was R***’s last day at school on Thursday. He’s been there for the past 16 years and I bet there was a few tears shed at school. Then again, he will be back there on Monday, as he is on the Summer Play Scheme. He looked very smart in his shirt and tie. Each leaver or graduate as they called them received their certificate to the sound of some music. They chose Queens ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ which is not something I would associate him with, but there you go.He starts at his college on 13 August. An ominous date, but least it’s not a Friday. He has only had 2 visits, but they seemed to go well from all accounts. Problem is that he will not realise that this is going to be his ‘new school’ so to speak. There could be some testing days ahead.

Talking of testing times. I have moved desks at work. Well, saying that, what I actually mean is that I now have a desk. I have been hot desking for the past six weeks. Sitting where ever there was s desk that nobody was sat at, which is not a good feeling. Not knowing from week to week where I will be sitting. Well now I have a desk. It is the desk that my new boss had set up for me in the first place. However one of the team thought I should sat with the team, rather than sat with the boss. It does not matter to me. I just want a desk !!! They guy that wanted me to ‘sit with the team’ might not be too pleased. Could be a fun day tomorrow.

Good intentions

I have meant to post, but the evenings just seems to run away these days. so to catch up. The play was as good as I was told it was going to be, and S**** was really pleased afterwards. As expected, Saturday night was a late one again. We got back in about half past two, and it would have been three when I fell into bed. Sunday was a lot quieter.

The past week was a bit hectic at work. We were having some new hardware and software installed, and it never quite goes to plan. This time it was not too bad. Still had problems, but they seem to be working themselves out. Fingers crossed. But it made for a very exhausting week.

Saturday, saw the first Strawberry Jam Music Festival. Well, I should explain. The toilets in the village hall need refurbishing, but there is no money to do it. One of the young people people in the village, decided to do something about it. She organised, what she called the ‘Strawberry Jam Music Festival’. It was basically a twelve hour musical event, featuring local, unsigned bands, that performed in the village hall. Some of the bands were quite well known in the local scene. Bands such as Soul Circus (who are playing both Leeds and Reading festivals), White Light Parade, Die Video Die, Testtone3 to name just a few. We had a Bramham guy called Owen Richards, who is part of a well known band called ‘Grammatics’. All in all, it was a good event.

The PTA website is coming along nicely. i just need to get people to pass me information. And as important, visit the site. I’ve emailed the committee members, to try and get them to pass the web address to other. We will see what happens. At the moment, the stats have ‘flat-lined’. It would be good, if people would sign up for the email. That would help.

A long long night

Well last night was the first night of S****s play. From all accounts, and I’ll see for myself tonight, it went really well. The place was packed, and it was a really good night. Mrs H went along with her sister, her niece and her niece’s friend, and enjoyed it very much. Afterwards, she stopped for a drink with the cast. At around midnight S**** and his mum came home, bringing with them two of S****s friends. We broke out the drinks and settled down for what I thought would be a couple of drinks, then bed. At 05:15am, it was decided that we needed to get a little sleep !!!!! R*** was asleep in our bed, se we gave his quilt to the friends, and I thought I would just crash on R***’s bed fully clothed. Not to be !!!!! at around 06:15am he woke up, and wanted to go into his bed. So from then onwards, until I got dressed at 08:00am, I was up and down with him. Shattered !!!!!! Will probably have to do it again tonight !!! Getting too old for this.

Better late than ……..

I did intend to post on Thursday evening. However, due to circumstances, entirely within my control (ie going to the pub again !!!) I failed to make it. The ‘play’ seems to be getting there, slowly but surely. Fingers crossed that on opening night, nobody forgets too many lines.  s**** has put a lot of work and thought into this. Just two more cast pictures to add to the programme and that is done.

No win at the quiz-nite this week, bit in our defence, the questions were quite hard. Highest score as only 32, and we were only one behind on 31. The picture quiz, were all international football shirts !!! R**, who is not known as a football fan, got them all bar one!

The work on the blog/website for the PTA is all but finished. I have just to update it with some links, and it will be ready approved. Once i get the go-ahead, I’ll put a link on this blog. There should be no problem with the newsletter, although, I would like to make it into a two page spread. I have a couple of ideas for non-PTA stuff, such as a word-search, Sudoku, crossword, that type of thing. It may add a bit of fun to what could become a quite boring piece of paper.

I don’t think I will watch the football today. I’m interested in who will win, but I seem to have lost interest sine England went out. I feel that Spain will win, but secretly hope that Holland do instead.

Very busy week at work, but it is set to be a bit quieter this week. I am off on Tuesday. Mrs H and me (possibly S**** too) are going to revisit the residential college, that we hope to get R*** into when he finishes school. S**** has never been, and I’m not too sure if he will go this time, but we will see.

Still here !!!!!

(Wednesday 30/06/10)

It’s been a long time since my last post (or so it seems). Quite a few late nights over the past few days. The play is coming along nicely, but after the rehearsal, S**** like to nip along to the local for a pint or three. Of course, like a good father, I like to go along too. Just to keep an eye on him (that is my excuse and I’m sticking to it !!!)

I’m still trying to convince myself, that Englands demise was not due to me wearing an England shirt !!! No really, I’m a little ashamed to be an England supporter at the moment. It really was not good. I have this theory though. When you look at all the other teams in this competition, most of the top players do not play in their home country. A lot of them play in the English Premier league. I think that gives the other teams a slight advantage.

(Sunday 04/07/10)

I’m struggling to find time to post these days. What with the youngest wanting the internet  and the ‘after drama drinks’. R*** does not have internet access on his PC. We thought it  would mean, that he would never be off, and that his PC would end up full of rubbish. He has a habit of cancelling any programs running that he does not want. this means, that my scheduled anti-virus scan and the daily updates often do not happen. However, I am looking into resizing the partitions on his hard disk, to free up some space, and then possibly get him Wi-Fi access. It could be a long job though. Thought I would defrag his computer first, and that has been running for nearly an hour now. Windows defrag has never been very fast

Work is going well at the moment. Although, the stress of the past few weeks, has led to a number of trips to the snack machine for ‘comfort’ food. This of course, together with the after drama drinks, has led to an increase in weight. I must get back on track. S**** and me may be going out on our cycles for an hour or so today. Saying that, the wind is picking up, so it may not happen. Anyway, could struggle to prise him out of bed. We shall see.
