A big surprise . . .

I’m not really a gambling person. I do the Postcode Lottery and the National Lottery Thunderball, but that’s about it. However, I do have a SkyBet online account. I opened it a couple of years ago, when I could not get to the local bookmakers, to place a bet on the Grand National. I wasn’t that bothered but a colleague at the time told me that a horse called Many Clouds stood a good chance and was being ridden by a friend of his. It was the only way I could get a bet on. The start-up was a minimum of £10.00 and they gave me a £10.00 single bet as a new customer bonus. It was a shame that I didn’t use that free £10.00 on the race, as the horse, Many Clouds won at 25/1 which would have been a good win. In fact, I didn’t even have a bet on the race as I had completely misread the starting time.

But all that is beside the point. I have this online account and I use it occasionally. The thing is I don’t speculate with large sums of money. I decided very early that having the opportunity to gamble whilst sitting at my laptop could lead to serious repercussions. So my betting account is just for fun! The largest bet I have made with it was a £5.00 bet on a horse that my sister-in-law’s partner has a share in. It lost! After that, I limit my bets to small wagers. Very small wagers. I like to randomly pick a venue, pick a race, and scroll down the list of runners and riders until a horse name strikes my eye. More often than not, that horse will not even be placed. Occasionally I will get a second or third place and get some of my money back. But they are never big winners, until recently that is.

Towards the end of March, I had one of my usual small bets, a 50p each-way wager (that’s how small my bets can be). It was the third race I had placed some money on and I didn’t even wait until the race had begun before I logged out and went to do some household jobs. It wasn’t until the following Monday, that I even checked the results. Big surprise, the horse had won and won at a price of 25/1. That gave me a return of £49.00! But it doesn’t end there.

Yesterday, I had a scroll through the various race meetings and I spotted that it was the day of the Irish Grand National. I scrolled down the list and picked a horse that was priced at 20/1. £1.00 each-way on that horse and then another one that was running at 10/1, another pound each-way. As a bit of a joke, I scrolled to the last horse in the race. The price was 125/1 and as I had an odd pound, I placed a bet, this time only 50p each-way. I logged out and completely forgot about it until this morning. Can you imagine my surprise when I checked the results and found that my ‘joke’ bet had won and my winnings were £75.00.

A little bit “miffed” …

More than a bit miffed really. (For those who don’t know the word click here) I do the National Lottery online. That is to say, I have an online account and I buy my tickets that way. So I never actually have a physical ticket as I find this way easier. If I win, then I get emailed and I log in to my account to see the prize. For some bizarre reason, I  had a go at the Euro-Millions draw (I usually do the Thunderball draw which is the cheapest!)

This morning, I got the email that announced “… got some news about your ticket …” which is their way of Winningssaying “You’ve won!!!” I quickly logged in to my account, to see that I had won a grand total of £2.60 on my ticket. Now when you consider, that the ticket actually cost me £2.50, I had actually won 10p. This was for predicting 2 correct numbers so you may be able to see why I was a “little bit miffed”.

Friday part 2 ……

I was checking whether I could upgrade my phone contract, before the 18 months is up. It would appear that I can do this, so long as it is not a cheaper contract, but I need to do it at least 24 hours before the date of my bill. Anyway, that is not the whole story. Whilst I had it in mind, I decided to check S****’s account. Horror !! His account was showing a spend of over £17.00. Now to say, at the beginning of the week he had a £4.50 credit, this was a hell of a shock. It would appear that he ‘accidentally’ subscribed to something he did not intend to. I don’t believe it. Mrs H rang him tonight, which I don’t think was a good idea. It left her feeling more down that she was before. They are both going to have to learn. Him to ring more often, for now at least 3 times a week. For her, just to wait for him to ring.

R*** has been fine again today, up until about half past six. Then as per usual we had an episode. Then another one around nine o’clock, and another one just around quarter past ten. As usual, no apparent reason.

Well the week is now over, and I haven’t been tempted to log into the work network. That’s not entirely true. I was tempted … but I did not relent. I’m dreading seeing the mess that will be left on my desk. I did check my mobile though. There only seemed to be the usual network problems.

No lottery win again. I seem doomed to fail at this. Neither ‘lucky-dip’ or my so called system works. I think for tomorrow, I will pick some significant numbers and try that for a week or two.

The problem I am having with Windows recycle bin has not been resolved. The ‘Ask Leo’ site has not come up with anything yet. Not that I expected it to. This is the second question I have asked and got no reply. I think I will post it on ‘The Elder Geek’ forum page. That usually elicits a reply of some kind.

Why do I get weirdo’s following me on Twitter. I can go for days without any new followers, then just buses, they all come at once. Three tonight. All of them trying to ‘help’ me make money on the internet. Go Away Spammers !!!!

Best laid plans…….

The above title, refers to the National Lottery (Lotto). I had it all worked out. I downloaded the 6 most often picked numbers, and did the Lotto with them. I got one number !!!!! So much for a system, although I will give the same numbers another go next week. It is as good as lucky-dip. What I need is a list of the winning lines, and from that, I’ll try and identify the lines that share the same numbers. I feel an Excel Pivot Table coming on here.

We managed a little walk today, Not easy with theThe Old Star - Clifford youngest as his first reaction to ‘lets go for a walk’ is always an emphatic ‘NO’. However after ignoring his protestations, we did get out. We walked about  4 miles or so, but we did have a pub break about two thirds of the way round. He knew where we were going too, because, just as we got to the pub, he turned into the beer-garden. We usually do this on this walk. My plan is to go to the Red Lion, with both of them tomorrow. I don’t hold out much hope at all. Youngest, said his usual … and the eldest just laughed.

The ‘move out’ day gets nearer. He is counting down the days, and I think Mrs H is trying to put a brave face on it. I don’t know how I feel yet. Part of me says. we’ve done our best and it is now up to him, and the other part is still worried about him. It’s that part that I’m trying to convince , that I was only a year or so older than him when I got married, and I was okay. When I left home for the first time, it was as a married man.

No one on MSN tonight, so it looks like an early night.

Saturday … the blog continues

Well it has been a reasonable if a little boring day. Eldest at work and Mrs H running the cafe at the school fayre. Apparently it went quite well. They don’t seem to get the numbers that they used to, but a lot of people cannot be bothered. That left me and the youngest ‘home alone’ . We had a bit of shopping to do, but he did not want to go at all. It was the quickest shopping trip ever I think. Forty-five minutes all in, and that includes driving there and back and parking too !!!! The rest of the time was spent doing jobs…yawn.

Did anyone see the new lottery show ???? Guestimation !! What a load of Nick Knowles rubbish. This tripe will be lucky to finish the series, let alone get a second one. Who is Nick Knowles anyway ? I thought he was a plumber or an electrician, not a serious presenter. Anyway, calling the programme rubbish was being kind. What made it worse was that I did not even get one number on either the Thunderball or Lotto !!!!

What else….did not do a walk today (again), I am getting out of the routine before I have even got into it. I am tempted to get my bike sorted, and go for a ride as an alternative to walking. It will probably be a better exercise, and may help to get the old stomach down a bit.

I am going to try and get the two lThe Red Lion - Bramhamads to go for a brief walk tomorrow, just to get out of the house. Even if it is only to the Red Lion. Could be an interesting hour or two. It probably will not happen, but fingers crossed. Saying that, I don’t know who will be the first to say, they are not going. It’s even money on both of them to say no! It will be nice it it happens. I will report back tomorrow.

We may have found the reason why the youngest ‘kicks off’ at around tea-time. I noticed that he was holding his ears, and getting upset whilst I was cooking. The extractor hood is quite noisy, and I thought it might be that. I turned it off, and he settled down very very quickly !!!! I will try this again tomorrow. I will have the fan on, and see if it has the same effect when I turn it off. Could be the answer. Quite often, we have the extractor on when he is eating.

Right, I think that is it for today. Quite a lot to say I have not done much.

A little bit of this ….. a little bit of that …..

Saturday went well. Potted on some of my seedlings. They are looking quite good, fingers (and everything else) crossed, they will survive the holiday. No luck with the Lottery again. There should be a prize for nearly numbers. You know, where you nearly get the right numbers. Maybe get you money back if 4 or more numbers are near to the drawn numbers. For example the Lottery (funny how no-one calls it ‘Lotto’!!) draws say 1,21,22,35,6,47 and you have 2,20,34,7 and a couple of others. Because 4 of your numbers are within 1 number of the draw number, you get £1.00 or a free play. Worth a thought ??

The National was good. Poor start again though. We Mon Mome - 2009 Gand National Winnerdon’t really need two false starts. It’s the jockeys fault, they should be ready. When the starter calls them in, they should be ready to go. Not facing the wrong way.  What’s that all about !! A 100:1 winner though, who would have thought of that. I bet only the groom and her partner had money on that one. The bookies are laughing all the way to he  travel agents.

Packing to do tomorrow morning. Youngest will want some more YouTube downloads. I think there are another 2 lots of 26 to do, and then it should be done. I timed it this afternoon. To download 26 videos and convert them to .wmv format, takes around 1 hour 15 minutes. I had 3 lots to do today. What he is doing is collecting the American versions of the classic series. There are 9 DVD’s in the series at the moment, although I think there is another one either out now or in the very near future.

This may be that last blog for a week. No internet while I’m away. With any luck, I should still be able to get MSN on the phone, so I’ll still be able to chat to anyone who wants to.
