Unsolicited mail …

To be honest, we don’t get much personal mail the the postal system. It tends to be bank statements, information from various Governmental organisations and stuff like that. The occasional holiday postcard might find it’s way in there, but not so often these days.

spamBut what we do seem to get a lot of, is mail that is addressed to either one or both of us offering some kind of financial service. These usually get dumped along with the rest of the junk flyers. What we have seen a rise in, is post that includes an application form, where all our personal details are all ready completed. One such form came on Monday that had 4 pages (pages, 8 sides in total) that had my name and address in 6 places. All this information has to be, according to the ‘experts’ shredded to prevent dubious sorts getting hold of my details.

Now a big issue with shredding, is that the Local Authority is unable to recycle green binshredded paper as they claim “We do not collect shredded paper in the green recycling bins. This is because we are unable to process it due to the small fibers which can interfere with the machinery creating costly maintenance issues”. My email to them suggesting they look to upgrade their machinery (and their spellchecking software) seems to have fallen on deaf ears as I am yet to receive a reply. Their advice is to “only shredding the parts of documents that contain your personal details e.g. name, address etc” which makes the task significantly longer.

Then this morning, I received a item of post from an organisation (I’m not going to mention their name, as I’m awaiting a reply from them) that I had never heard of, that had my name and address on both pieces of paper. I was quite annoyed about this, as one of the sheets was asking for a Sobdonation. The donation range started at a single £5.00 increasing up £1000.00 and what really tipped the balance was that the £25.00 check box had already been ticked. The other page was one of those ‘sob stories’ that are supposed to trigger an emotional response. They don’t work with me I’m afraid.

I have emailed a complaint about this and asked them to remove my details from their database, and name the source of the information. I doubt that either will happen. I have also redacted my details from the 2 pages and have posted it all back to them in their enclosed pre-paid envelope.

Annoying Mailshots

One of the things I find a little difficult on occasions, is finding a title for my post. As I don’t have a particular theme for my blog (yet!) it can be hard to give a post a title that refers to anything within that post. So this time, I’m titling this post with the first main topic, and I will see how that develops over time.

==========

Today is ‘Shredding Day’. The recycling bin was emptied during the week and I can now have a go at shredding all the junk that we have received. I’m not allowed to simply put shredded paper directly into the bin (it causes the sorting machine at the waste depot to jam) so I shred and dump into a bin liner. Some of it can go into the hot composter but most will have to go int the bin.

Now the thing that really annoys me, is the amount of documents that have personal details on them. I’m not talking about documents that I have requested such as bank statements and receipts and the like. no i mean the unsolicitated junk mail that drops through the letter box on a regular basis. For example, one of the pieces of junk was a six sided, a4 document from a bank that I am not a customer of , or in fact want to be a customer of. This document was inviting me to apply for a loan, to ‘see me over the festive period‘ as the accompanying letter (another a4 page) explained. The big issue with the application form was that my personal details ie name and postal address, had been completed for me … on every page! In fact on two of the pages, the details were recorded twice. So that means four pages to shred. Do they really think that I am so stupid, that I cannot fill my own name and address or do they actually think it is helpful? How many people respond to this type of unsolicited mail? If I was considering applying for a loan, I certainly would not wait for some junk mail to arrive to save me time completing the form.

The hoped for job interview did not materialise. I really though I was in with a chance of getting the job, but I did not even get an interview! I was more than a bit disappointed, but I am only allowing myself to think that either the other applicants were more qualified for the position or that I completely messed up my application form. I think it was probably both. I don’t want to get into the senario that the someone was lined up for the job, even if that were the case. So I’m sticking to my original theory.

This leads me on to a decision I need to make. Last week, I saw G*****, the head of our service team for a chat about the new rules for Local Government pensions. It was a very informative meeting, but I think he really wanted to know my feelings on taking early retirement. The Council that I work for has this programme that they call ‘ELI’ or Early Leavers Initiative. It gives staff who are within a certain age band the opportunity to retire from Local Government early without a loss of pension. I applied before, some four/five years ago and was turned down . I told him that I wasn’t interested, citing financial reasons. My main reason was that I though I was in with a chance of the above  mention job.

Anyway, I have to the end of January to let him know in writing, my final decision. I now feel, that I should take a fresh look at the whole ‘ELI’ issue again. So I am now composing (in my head at the moment) an email to him advising of my change of heart. I’m not sure if I should mention all my reasons for this change, or simply wait for him to ask why. I think I will mention the disappointing job application, but I will probably leave it at that.

…. fools ….

Work happened. That is about the only kind thing I can say about it. I really struggle sometimes to cope with the incompetence of some people. I do not have a problem with those who find things difficult, but know it. No the ones that are the problem, are the ones that think they are intelligent. The other problem is the arrogance of some people. those who are where they are, because they have walked over others. You know the type I mean, those that are so far up their bosses backside, that they can see daylight !!! We all have colleagues like that, don’t we !!! Rant over !!!

Youngest seems to be having a good (?) time. His support worker rang tonight, to let us know how he is getting on, and everything seems to be going quite well.

I’m starting to get quite a significant amount of junk mail. Insurance mainly. I’m usually quite careful when I fill forms in, to ensure that my name is not added any ‘3rd party’ contacts. I can only imagine that the rubbish I’m getting stems from when I used the comparison web-sites for my car insurance.

A wake up call……..

We got a bit of a shock at 01:30 this morning. The telephone went, and you know what it’s like, when you just seem to have got off to sleep. Well, I did not know what it was at first, then Mrs H jumped out of bed to answer it. It was S**** from the Leeds Festival. He was coming home for a sleep, and could we leave the door unlocked. It gives you a kind of sick feeling when you get a phone call at that time. Anyway he arrived home at around 02:15, but he was still awake 03:30, listening to an audio cd on his lap-top. He slept right through until 12:00 though. I dropped him off at 02:00pm, but he says he is coming home tonight. It will be better than trying to struggle out in the morning. Mrs H is going to pick up the majority of his stuff at 05:00pm this afternoon, so that will save some time.

Now for a bit of a rant !!! I have been paper shredding all the old bills and statements this weekend, and am amazed at how much there was. What is really annoying is those unrequested forms from insurance and credit card companies that have all your details already filled in !!!  Why do they do that ?? Do they think that I would be so grateful that I don’t have to fill their form in, that I’ll buy their product ?? Or do they think that I’m so stupid as to not know what details and where to fill them ?? Who in their right mind would buy that kind of product, from companies that are so desperate to sell that the have to sell by junk mail ?? Stop filling my details in !!!!! I don’t want your products, and I don’t want to have to spend time shredding your waste !!

   Maybe more later
