I recently decided that I needed a Bluetooth keyboard for my iPad. Never really liked typing on screen as I have more or less grown up with ‘proper’ physical keyboard. So I scoured eBay and found one that looked to be just what I wanted. Not the cheapest and not the most expensive either. It was about the price I was willing to pay so I ordered one. It duly arrived on time and I quickly read the instructions for setting up and pairing with my iPad. That done, I began to look at the features of the keyboard and its basic operating procedures. The first thing I needed to do was to charge it with the ‘ … enclosed micro USB to USB cable …’ and here was a problem. There was no cable! I was not worried as I seem to have more than my fair share of these cable which seem to come with everything. But, I thought, if there is one supposed to be included then there should be one. I decided to message the seller and advise them that the cable had not been included. I told them that I did not need a cable and that I was just letting them know so that they could contact their supplier in case there was a problem. After a few days I received a very polite reply, apologising for the delay and asking me what I wanted to do. Did I want a full refund or did I want a replacement? The caveat was that I would have to dispose the first unit myself. I emailed back and explained again, that it was only the cable, that I didn’t need another and wasn’t seeking a refund or replacement.
The email had only just been sent, when I had one of those “Doh!” moments. What had I done? The guy was going to either send a second unit or refund my payment. He didn’t want the first one back. So I would have had either a free unit or two units, and I turned him down! What can I say? Either getting soft or getting too old.
Youngest is doing his usual Saturday ‘thing’ and watching YouTube videos on my laptop. He does this every weekend, after he has had his wash/bath, he’ll come down and sit at my laptop until his lunch is ready. I was going to use my older laptop to do some work on but I thought I would give this a go.
So, I am sat at the living room table, with my iPad Mini and TechGear bluetooth keyboard, writing this post directly into the iOS WordPress editor! An unusual experience to say the least. I think I may have tried using the editor before on my laptop, but usually like to write posts using Open Live Writer (OLW), which is a free piece of software born out of the now defunct, Windows Live Writer. If you’ve not tried OLW, can I suggest you give it a try. Back to the post in question!
I found the settings for Tags and Categories and managed to add some, but it is a lot harder to actually work with. In OLW I have a single button that will post some work as draft. I can then go into the web version of WordPress, check for any errors (there usually is a couple or six!) before I finally post. The iPad app seems to offer the same facility, but it is going to take me a while and a lot more practice if I’m going to make a habit of it.
One thing I have found, it seems to quite difficult to centre a line of text. There must be a way, but maybe not with this keyboard.
** Update** I think I may now know why. The Techgear bluetooth keyboard is mapped for an Android no iOS. There are (apparently) a number of differences between the keyboards of the two systems
Now using a bluetooth keyboard connected to my tablet.
That’s the weekend then !
I tried out the new mop today. It worked just as I expected. Mrs H has always doubted that any kind of mop would be any good in the kitchen. I think she has memories of when we used to mop the floors at work. There you washed the floor with a very wet mop and then dried it. The mop we got, more or less does a dry mopping. Cannot believe I am talking about a mop here !!!!
Still having problems with the bluetooth. It’s not so much the bluetooth itself, more a problem of getting things to work together. My Sony handheld just does not want to play. It uses a port that is is use by something else, and I think it could be the phone. I may need to re-install the software, although I can connect using a USB cable, so it is not really a problem, more an inconvenience.
I’m going to have a day off during the week. A flexi day. This will be the first full flexi day, I have had off in nearly a year. I’ve been staying until about half 4 everyday, and it has made up enough time for a day off. Just need the weather to be reasonable. Fingers crossed.
It took me nearly a hour, to do the shredding today. Admittedly, there were a large amount of old bank statements, but the thing that annoyed me most, were the pre-filled forms. You know the ones I mean. They come from banks and insurance companies, trying to get you to sign up. There must have been at least 20 of the damn things. Do these companies really think, that if they fill my name and address in for me, that I’ll buy their product ? (Note to self: Do the shredding weekly)
The borders in the living room came off a treat. It looks like the ones in the dining room will be the same. We/I think that I will have to decorate the living room first, before I start on the dining room. The hardest part, I suppose, will be moving the large furniture. That is the sideboard and drinks cabinet. Both are full and very heavy. Fun times ahead !!
I’m not too keen on the new facebook setup. The status update seem to be all over the place. The best idea would be to invite a number of people to test out the new ideas, then implement them, with the option of going back to the old version.
Still having a few problems with the updated phone. The email seems to keep disconnecting. I will try and look on the forums tomorrow. There may be a setting that needs to be altered. I have also been having a bit of trouble with the bluetooth. I keep getting asked for authorisation, although I may have sorted that one, just now. I cannot seem to send files to the PC at the moment. The phone says they have been sent, but I have no idea as to where they are ending up. Certainly not in the place they went to before.
When I say that that the whiskey is all gone, I mean nearly all gone. Just a smidgen left, of which I am sampling now. If the medics have their way, it will be all gone. Question: how does making alcohol more expensive for me, stop the pissheads from buying the stuff in Europe, packing it into a van, and then selling it cheap to kids when they get back home ? So why not round up all the idiots that fall out of pubs and clubs totally wasted, and lock them up. Pay for their keep out of the exorbitant tax that is levied on alcohol. Rant over !
Eldest has just texted me. He wants picking up tomorrow afternoon when I finish. He wants to go to drama. I think though, that he wants to see some of his friends. I have a strange idea, that he may have forgotten that is was ‘quiz-nite’. He seems to have got himself a few days work though. Sounds like it is luggage hauling at a hotel in the city. We will find out a little more tomorrow. He took his phone into the Three shop today. They could not do anything, and they did not have a replacement. So they packed him off to Carphone Warehouse, who will get it fixed under warranty.
I needed to get a new battery for my bluetooth headset today. I thought it used AAA batteries, and it came a bit of a shock the find that I needed AAAA batteries. I did not know that they made AAAA size. Neither Asda or Tesco had them, so I tripped off to Maplins at lunchtime. £4.99 for a pack of four !!! It was either that or £3.99 for a pack of two. Ridiculous price. Still I’ve got them now.
I must try and remember, that I do not really like whiskey from Islay. I do not know what it is, but it tastes like a some form of medicine !! I understand that it is the peat in the water that gives it the taste, but it is rather strange.
Done for now.
A quiet day today. R*** had a lie-in until 07:30 which was nice. No jobs to do today, except making the dinner. I pegged out a few more strawberry plants. That will make about 8 new plants all together. I don’t really know how we will over winter them. I think, I’ll leave them out doors until it starts to get frosty, and maybe put them in the shed, with some fleece over them. I don’t think they will keep very well in my little greenhouse.
S**** was online with Mrs H tonight. He doesn’t seem to be that well. His back is getting so bad, that he says he is having difficulty walking!! Mind you, it does not seem to stop him spending all night watching DVDs. He says he was up all last night, until 10:00am this morning, watching ‘24’. Now that surely cannot help !!
It seems funny seeing Mrs H on messenger. I’ve also got her checking her email. Now that I’ve got Outlook, I’ve moved my accounts from Outlook Express, so that there is only her account on there. What with that, and her searching online and Googling, there will be no stopping her.
All my bluetooth kit seem to be working okay now (hurriedly looks for wood to touch.) I had to uninstall the bluetooth software and drivers, before I could get my PDA to synchronise. For some reason, the software was only opening two COM ports, when there should have been about 4 or 5. Odd thing is though, that while ever the Nokia PC Suite is open, both my phones are connected to the PC. I’m not sure if that is a good thing or not. What it does mean though, is that I can have all my contacts and calendar details on both my phone, PDA and the PC. I think I’ll give up with the Tiscali email. It is not that good, and apart from getting a monthly email from OpenOffice.Org (which I no longer use), the rest is spam. Now I know I get a lot of spam with the Gmail address, but Google seems to have a very good spam filter, something that Tiscali could do with.
I think that will do for today.
When I said that Office 2007 installation went well, I may have spoken too soon. I had problems with the Bluetooth, Outlook and my webcam. Now I suppose the Bluetooth and the webcam may be down to installing the RAM, but Outlook was a problem. First I had application errors linked to Visual C++, then I could not import any emails or contacts from Outlook Express. Out of frustration, I uninstalled Outlook and resolved to stick with OE. Then, like the optimist I’m not, I decided to reinstall Outlook. This time everything worked !!!! Unbelievable. Now I’m struggling to understand the need for Microsoft Groove !!! What a name. I have an idea what the program is about, but it installs as default, and I just do not think it is for home use. So that went. Fingers crossed, everything’s working as it should now.
Eldest came back from the festival early today. His back has been playing him up really badly over the past few days. I don’t suppose sleeping in a tent helped. He was going back to see The Kaiser Chiefs and The Kings of Leon, but the back won the day in the end. I get the impression, that he had had enough anyway. You could really hear The Kaiser Chiefs tonight. It was very clear, and I think the wind must have been in the right direction. They were on for a good 75 minutes, and from what I cold hear, were singing all their hits. The Kings of Leon on the other hand seemed to be a lot quieter. I was quite amazed too, that their set lasted exactly 1 hour. All done by 10:00pm. Not good value for money for a headline band on the last night.
Today went as well as it should have. No problems with the handhelds over the weekend, which is a good thing. I thought we may had an issue with one of them, but it seems to have either corrected itself, or more likely it was an user error. Everyone seemed to be in a happier mood than usual. It is not good really, when a managers staff enjoy his holiday more than he does !!!!!
R*** was back from his respite today, and he is still very much the same as he went. Still the random attacks without any apparent reason. One minute anger, the next laughing.
Managed to get some music and some ringtones on my phone today. It is not the same as the old phone, as it is a completely different operating system. So the way I managed the files before bears no resemblance to the way I do now. The Nokia PCSuite will not connect via bluetooth, which is odd, so I have to use the USB cable, or connect through the Blue Soleil bluetooth manager. Only another two days to go, before I am able to utilise the full package. What’s the betting, I don’t use it to it’s full potential. I think I may use the calendar option though … we shall see.
The new TV is performing well. We found out how to get the radio on through the Freeview, and how to use it a picture frame. I am going to put some pictures on a memory stick, and see if we can get a slide show.
Still no Skype call from S****. He knows his mum wants to say hello, but he seems to be avoiding the issue. He was on MSN yesterday, but seemed to go offline when I went online. All it takes is for him to sign in for a while, and she would be happy. Well for a while anyway. I wonder if he has got a job yet. I texted him, but no reply as yet. With me still not used to this phone, I don’t know if he got the message.
Right, I think that is enough for one day.
Well we got the new TV today. Looks quite good and the picture is great. We have had to move the screen around a little so it does not block out any more light, but it is quite watchable in its current position. We have been trying to get S****s surround sound to work. It has been partly successful. We can get the theatre sound with the DVD, and with the analogue TV channels ie the Freeview, but we have not had any luck with Sky system. I think it may be something to do with the way the SCART cables are plugged in. May have to have juggle them round a bit.
New mobile seems quite good. It has been a bit of a struggle to connect via bluetooth. The PC suite is not the most intuitive, but I can always connect by the USB cable. There is a lot to learn though. I still have to work out how I can get my old ringtones onto the new phone. I also need to know how to get access to the applications that appear to be on the thing.
It did not start well. The youngest lad up at 4:30am. He was in and out of our room for his ‘cuddles’ about every half hour. I reset the alarm clock for 7:00am, thinking I would be off at just after 7:40am. However, I had not banked on the frost. To make matters worse, the ‘de-icer’, that was a good price is a bit rubbish. The spray is so fine, that it just does nothing at all. So it took 20 minutes to get the car into a sufficiently safe state to drive. I was a little worried that I was low on juice, but the light was not on, so no problems. As soon as I hit the motorway, on came the light. The petrol gauge was hovering just a fraction above empty. So with fingers crossed I got to work. Just had to worry about getting home now, but there are plenty of service stations on the way home.
I thought I had trashed my mobile tonight. I had tried to send a ‘flash’ movie file (.flv) by bluetooth, but it was taking such a long time, that I cancelled the transfer. After that, nothing on the phone would work. Literally nothing was working. A bit of panic was staring to set in as I had no idea what the problem was, or what I could do even. I tried everything I could think of, but as soon as the the phone started, it crashed. I then had a random thought, and changed the memory card for the older one. Hey presto, as if by magic, the damn thing worked as normal. I was able to then delete the offending file from the phone memory and then replace the memory again. Job done. So now I’m puzzled. Why should changing the memory card allow the phone to work again ? Is there a link between the internal phone memory and the card ? Do I really care ? I think not.
The catering department are selling ‘bacon n sausage’ butties tomorrow. They are a good price, cheaper than the van by about 60p. It all depends on whether they are a comparable size. They say the baps are ‘floured’ baps, so I hope they are not those dinner bun size. That would be a bit small. Never mind, I will give it a try once and report back.
Speaking of reporting back, I made a start on the biography today and as promised, I read chapter one. It has started very well, and I’m enjoying it already. A friend has read it and says it gets better as it progresses.
