Who uses free or freeware antivirus software, and which do you use.
For many years I have used AVG in it’s many free versions. I have never used a paid service, and have never felt the need to do so. Yesterday, I foolishly clicked a link on Facebook. I was trying to hide the post (or so I say) but hit the link instead. Almost immediately, AVG warned me of the threat, and dealt with it. As a precaution, I decided to do a full scan. Lo and behold, a trojan and a number of variations were found. These, unusually found in the uninstall files. As expected AVG dealt with the problem. A quick Google told me a little about the trojan, but also alerted me to the fact that AVG was reporting the infections, but that they were false positives. I then had problems removing the so called ‘infections’, but AVG would not let me access them. The only way round was to disable AVG, restore the ‘infected’ files, unistall the software and download the latest versions. This done, I restarted AVG, only to be told that the files we still infected. Arghhhhhhhh.
I then decided that AVG was the problem, and it had to go.
I am now using Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), and was just interested what others use.
(btw MSE did not find any of the trojans that AVG found – is this a worry?)
I got a facebook email from someone today, and like a fool, I clicked on it to open it. I should know better of course. So it came as no real shock at all when AVG warned me that the page I was about to visit was a threat. I started to run a virus scan and it looks like nothing has happened. I dropped a message to the person who supposedly sent the email, but they know nothing about it. I explained what happened, and they denied all knowledge and said their system was ‘safe’. I rather think not !!! That is one ‘friend’ I can do without, thank you. I have had this before with some people. You tell them they have a problem, and they just ignore it
You may remember, some time ago, I mentioned about someone trying to rent out their parking permit, illegally, well nothing seems to have come of it. Management, or at least part of management, does not seem to be bothered. The woman emailed me again today, and I fobbed her off with an excuse. I then closed the email account. If the bosses cannot be arsed, then why should I ?
A bit of a job to do, over the next half an hour. The youngest has made one of his pictures. Basically, what he does is to take a graphic of one of his favourite cartoon characters and edits it. For example, on the one below he has changed the hands and added the hat (from another picture). He pastes it into MS Paint. Then he takes a copy of the same graphic, reverses it, and places at the side of the first. Dad has to then step in. I have to print it, fold and stick it so that it is double sided, then laminate it and trim it. R*** calls this type of picture his ‘Front or Back’. Considering his condition, this is quite an amazing skill he has got. The other thing he does, is to download, video and DVD covers of his, again favourites from American websites. He then makes these into his own video and DVD covers. We have hundreds of empty video and DVD boxes, that he has designed covers for. Only problem …… ink !!!
AVG been running over 2 hours now, and nothing has come up, so it looks like I’m safe.
The cold is at that stage, where it doesn’t know whether to get worse or not. Mrs H keeps asking me if I’ve had any paracetamol. To be honest, they make the whiskey taste really bad.
I’m glad the smarmy one went out of Masterchef tonight. I though he was going to start crying during his ‘loser’ interview. There was a thinly veiled treat, I guess, when he said, words to the effect “You’ll see me again”. Look out ‘Big Cook – Little Cook’.
Something strange there. Just tried to log into, what used to be Yahoo/Lycos chat, and AVG told be it was a potentially dangerous site, and would not let me access the page. It did on third attempt, and there is nothing in AVG to tell be it was blocking the site. Very strange indeed.
That’s right. Only two more days, then I get a week annual leave. To be honest, I think I need it. It has been a long July, and August looks like it could be the same.
The eldest lad phoned at lunchtime, to say he was not feeling so good. Sounds like he has had a dodgy pizza on top of a few (or not so few) pints of Tetley’s. He’s spent the day in bed. Of course Mrs H is thinking swine flu !!!! But then again, so many people think they have got/had swine flu, or at least, some version of it !!! Strange thing happened tonight though. Mrs H had been trying to ring him, and was very concerned (as usual) that he was not answering his phone. I signed into MSN on my mobile, and noticed the he was signed in also. So I messaged him, but got no reply. Then he rang to say how he was. Later, I had to go upstairs, and noticed that his room door was open, and that his PC was running. I turned on the monitor, and it was running an AVG scan. Could not understand why it was running, or why the PC was on. I checked some of the PC settings, to see if it was set to start-up when AVG scan was due, and there was nothing I could see. We are now thinking, that the youngest lad had, for some reason, switched the PC on. Unfortunately, his condition prevents him from saying whether he did or not !!!! Strange. I will ask S**** when I see him if it has done that before.
No J**** on MSN again. Not chatted since the 1st of August. I hope I’ve not upset her or scared her off at all. She is a nice person to chat to. Last thing I said to her, was that I hoped to talk more about her. Maybe that’s it. Maybe I sounded too heavy !! Who knows. Just got a message. Been busy, that’s all. I had a quick chat with M**** on facebook earlier. Been a long time since I chatted to her. She’s been through the mill over the past few months. Doesn’t pull any punches at all. She was one of the first people I chatted to on the ‘Lycos Chat’ that was. Seems to be a good laugh. Always been straight with me. Here’s a thought …… why are most of my online friends women ????
Bloody appraisal tomorrow (as I may have said a few times). It will be another period of my life I’ll never get back. It’s not as if it really means anything. No promotion, pay increase or anything like that, just an excuse to give me my ‘objectives’ for the year. Oh and an excuse for Spike to be both patronising and condescending at the same time. How does he do that ?? There must be an art to it.I’d just love to be fly on the wall, when he does G***s appraisal. She takes even more serious than he does. Could be fun.
Done for now.
It seems to have been a long week already. Never mind, there is Friday to look forward to … Spike is off !! Hurrah. Seriously, he has to be the most unpopular person in the department. Trouble is, I think he knows …… and does not care.
Firefox has been playing up tonight. It seemed to have forgotten some of the sites I have had the password saved for. It could have been when I ran AVG last night. I think I deleted some cookies that should have been kept.
The TinyUrl plugin for IE did not work on Firefox. It did not save the URL to the clipboard as it should. There is a Firefox’s own plugin, that may work. To be honest, I don’t quite know if I’ll use it, but it’s there if I do.
I downloaded a .pdf from the Harrogate RSPB local group. A very professional piece of work. They seem to be fairly well organised group. I have been looking for a local group to possibly join. I also looked at the York group, but that did not seem to be as good. The website was terrible. It was so difficult to see. There did not seem to be a nearer group. I thought there may have been a Wetherby group, but there does not appear to be one. There is probably a local ‘bird watcher’ group, but I would prefer to be part of an RSPB affiliated group. They don’t appear to be as cliquey as the independent groups. The membership of these groups vary very little. Harrogate is £6.00 per year (from April, so that is good), York is £8.00, Richmond and Wharfedale was around the same rate, and I could not see the fee for the Leeds & District (based in Shipley!! More Bradford and District if you ask me). I don’t suppose I’ll go to any meetings, but it would be interesting.
You may have noticed that a proliferation of RSS feeds have sprung up on this blog. Well I am a little geeky, and I do enjoy reading the hints and tips on these IT websites. I also am trying to become an expert on Excel. I have a long way (ie a very long way) to go, but you have to start somewhere. Who knows, I may end up adding an Excel tips page to this blog. Just don’t hold your breath.
The ‘Grow house’ continues to be a success. The salad leaves, are getting a little stronger, and the first of the leaf beat has just started to show. Nothing from the old seeds though. The Marigolds should start to show over the next day or two, and that will be an indicator as to whether the others are going to germinate. I may be pushing it with the Blue Poppies though. The packet said that they were not a novice seed .. hmmm. We will see, I hope.
